MINDFULNESS & RELAXATION TRAINING
Up to 80% of initial doctor visits are due to symptoms related to stress. Our response to stress can significantly increase our mental and physical symptoms and greatly hinder our body's ability to repair, heal, and return to a state of balance.
There are BodyMind techniques that allow a mindful relaxation state that has been proven to reduce a variety of physical and mental complaints and disorders, including: anxiety, pain, insomnia, depression, premenstrual symptoms, and many more disorders that are triggered by our response to stress or our learned inability to allow a deeper level of mindful relaxation.
As Harvard Medical professor Dr. Herbert Benson states: "Mind body science has now reached a stage where it should be accepted as the third major treatment and prevention option, standing as an equal alongside drugs and surgery in the clinical medical pantheon.” This is serious. We will always be fascinated by the next new technological advancement, but they can never replace the central importance of proper rest and rejuvenation. Unfortunately, the average mind and body of today has lost the ability to properly quiet down and engage the optimal healing powers we have within each of us.
I teach these skills in both group format and one on one sessions.
Meditation alone has numerous proven benefits, yet our focus here is on a specific intention of relaxing the body and mind in order to elicit the "Stop" response, or the Relaxation Response (explained below). We look to not only bring a sense of peacefulness and relaxation during and immediately after your practice, but also create powerful changes within the habit patterns of your nervous system and brain. With regular practice, we now know that we can actually change the expression of your genes which can allow for a significant reduction of your symptoms and a return to wellness.
Your body has a Go response and a Stop response. Your Go response is activated when you orient to any stimulus and then move , think, or feel. Your body's Stop response activates when you slow down, pause, and rest both externally and internally. That true, deep internal pause can be the tricky one (imagine a cat sitting on the sofa back, truly at rest).
Both responses are crucial: you need your Go Response to act, think, and feel, you need your Stop (or Relaxation) response to return to an internal state of neurochemical and physiological balance and allow your immune system to repair and heal your body and mind. A cat doesnt just rest at night when it sleeps, but any time it rests between activity. Without proper and regular elicitation of a Stop response, our body does not heal itself, our mind does not properly digest and integrate our experiences, and we no longer have a healthy internal balance.
The effects of not returning to a state of balance snowball over time. Symptoms of disorder and dis-ease manifest within our body and mind. Our reaction to these symptoms of disorder often creates more stress and dis-ease, taking us further away from finding balance.
It is possible to engage a deeper Relaxation Response through various experiences: massage, yoga, tai chi, meditation, walks in nature, a hot bath. Often though, we may need some help in breaking thru unhealthy patterns and disorder that has entered into our system. Pure mindfulness meditation can sometimes be too challenging, even increasing our dysregulation. Working individually, we can begin to identify the patterns of your nervous system and how to make adjustments that fit your specific needs and style. With guidance, one learns to overcome any challenges that may arise on the inside. At times we may use breathwork, therapeutic touch, guided movement, EFT Tapping, positive visualizations, and various other cognitive and emotional strategies to improve your ability for mindfulness and relaxation of your body and mind.
